Community Solar Garden Program

From Cooperative Energy Futures:

Cooperative Energy Futures (CEF) is a local energy cooperative housed in South Minneapolis at the Sabathani Community Center. Please see the Video invitation to sign up for community solar with CEF  from Scott Redd, CEO and President of Sabathani Community Center.

We are collaborating with various neighborhood organizations and community-based organizations to spread the word about our Community Solar Garden (CSG) Program that saves you money on your Xcel bill, while building community-member owned renewable energy infrastructure. We give priority to community members with lower incomes or that participate in programs like SNAP, WIC, energy assistance and Medicaid.

Our community-member owned CSG program allows community members, whether you rent or own, to share the benefits of the solar array we are building on the parking canopy at Abbott Northwestern Hospital at 28th and Chicago. Check out this beautiful footage!

Benefits of being a CEF member and Community Solar Garden Subscriber:

  • Subscribers receive monthly credits on Xcel electric bills for their portion of the solar energy produced by the project

  • Subscribers pay the co-op for that energy at a lower rate, creating monthly savings. Every month.

  • Subscribers have no upfront or out-of-pocket cost, except a ONE-TIME $25 member fee. If this fee is a barrier for anyone, we work to get the fee covered or create a payment plan.

  • Our members guide renewable energy development and share in benefits, creating community wealth.

How CEF Community Solar Gardens work:

  • You have to be an Xcel customer;

  • Renters and owners welcome; no landlord permission needed;

  • No physical changes are required to your place of residence;

  • Panels are located on a large industrial roof or in a field or on a parking canopy.;

  • No credit check and no minimum income required.

  • You can live anywhere in Minnesota and join any community solar garden, as long as you’re an Xcel customer.
