Panel: Is DEI Dead?

Join us for a panel discussion about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). We’ll explore the impact of the Supreme Court case eliminating affirmative action in college admissions, and the recent actions by corporations and the government ditching their DEI programs. What is the future of DEI and what are some strategies for ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion in the face of adversity.
The panel includes Dr. Yohuru Williams, Distinguished University Chair and Professor of History and Founding Director of the Racial Justice Initiative at the University of St. Thomas; Maya Sullivan, Dean of Student Success at Metro State University; James C. Burroughs II, Senior Vice President of Government and Community Relations, and Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer at Children’s Minnesota; and Seena Hodges, Founder and CEO of The Woke Coach.

Mini-Forest Revolution: Rewild the World
From the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis:
Hannah Lewis is a writer focusing on people, nature, and conservation. She has a MS in Sustainable Agriculture and Sociology from Iowa State University, and a BA in Environmental Studies from Middlebury College. She loves gardening, composting, cooking, reading, writing, and dancing. She discovered the Miyawaki Method and wrote Mini-Forest Revolution while living in France, but currently lives in Minneapolis, where she works for non-profit Renewing the Countryside to help build sustainable, equitable local food systems and plant mini-forests.
Miyawaki Method: A tree planting technique developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, which focuses on planting native species densely to create diverse and resilient forests quickly. This method can establish a self-sustaining forest in just 20 to 30 years, significantly faster than traditional methods.

The Six Triple Eight is a war drama film written and directed by Tyler Perry about the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black and female battalion during World War II. This is a training for any school parent, caregiver, teacher, or social worker that is interested in JOINING or leading their school’s Sanctuary School Team. We have done most of our work in Minneapolis, so much of the information in the training is from that organizing, but is applicable to other schools across the country!
This training covers three main things in two sections. The first section (6-7pm CST) covers:
Our demands and campaign to get ICE out of our schools everywhere and
Our best practices for patrols and rapid response
The second section contains (7-8pm CST) a deep dive into how to set up mutual aid like transportation, food, and rent relief for families at your school.

Women Defending Democracy: MPD Separation Ordinance & Op. Metro Surge

We are honored to be joined by Minneapolis Chief of Police O’Hara to discuss the Separation Agreement as a policing strategy, its origins in crime reduction efforts, and how it has reshaped the relationship between the MPD and minority communities. Operation Metro Surge and ICE’s detention of lawful immigrants and U.S. citizens have now challenged its implementation and drawn criticism from residents who are questioning the MPD’s ability to ensure public safety and mitigate neighborhood disruptions and violence. This conversation with Chief O’Hara will provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions, share experiences, and engage directly with the Chief on these important issues.

Preserving Minneapolis’ Black History

Join historians and Minneapolis historic preservation staff to learn about the recently completed African American Historic and Cultural Context study. What is a context study and how does it fit into the preservation landscape? How was the study conducted? Learn how preservation professionals evaluate and identify important historical resources by working in partnership with community members. This study is leading to at least three nominations to the National Register, currently in progress. Presented by Erin Que and Steve Gallo.

This intergenerational celebration welcomes children ages 10 and under and their favorite grown-ups for a day of fun. Enjoy enchanting stories from the påskkärring (Easter Witch), play games, and create your own decorations and cards featuring Swedish phrases. The afternoon egg hunt will take place outside, rain or shine. Don’t miss out—register by Monday, March 9!

Stop the Bleed Trainings

Stop the Bleed is a training for all community members and professionals. Trainees will learn how to identify life threatening bleeding and then how to control it. You will learn about direct pressure, tourniquets, and hemostatic gauze. The curriculum integrates lecture and hands on skills.

Walker Sensory Friendly Sundays

Sensory Friendly Sunday is a monthly event designed for kids, teens, and adults with sensory processing differences, autism, or developmental disabilities. The galleries will be closed to the general public, allowing visitors to enjoy the museum in a calm environment, with accommodations such as quiet spaces, fidgets, and sunglasses available. Experience a selection of current exhibitions, make art, or watch a short film. All friends and family members are welcome.

Luminary Loppet
From Meet Minneapolis:
The candlelit Luminary Loppet is the Twin Cities’ most magical event of the season. Come out to Lake of the Isles and enjoy the Luminary Loppet where you can walk, snowshoe, or ski on the candlelit trail winding across the lake. Experience 1,200 luminaries lining the trail with unique ice features and much more – all in the heart of Uptown. Refreshments such as hot chocolate will be offered at tents across the lake. Food trucks, beer, and music are located at the Luminary Party.

Vigil & Ceremony: ICE Out for Good
From Art of Heather Friedli & House of Thune:
A snow sculpture beside Lake of the Isles features elements from the two teams silenced at the World Snow Sculpting Championship. Featuring Renee Good wearing a blindfold saying "ICE OUT!", the work has hands reaching out signing in ASL "ICE OUT" on the back. The project also features a memorial wall, listing the lives lost in ICE detention and the legal observers on our streets.This project was brought into being by poet Heid E. Erdrich, who was moved after the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and the silencing of these brave artists voices. Heid will do a reading, and we will sing a song in honor of the fallen.

Please join First Peoples of Mni Sóta Makoce for official public memorial ceremony in collaboration with the Good Family, mourning all those lost in this occupation. Open to All Walks of Life who will Stand with us in Peace & Prayer – Nawajin en Wodakota k’a Wocekiye.
Memorial ceremony led by Arvol Looking Horse followed by community-led singing, poetry and more. Children warmly welcome, please leave dogs and protest signs at home. Please wear sparkles, glitter, and glam!

But first, the transpiration of deep time buries them in the watery depths, under sedimented layers of expired life, eventually to be transformed into … crude oil.
